What is MP3?
MP3 is a compressed music file and stands for MPEG-1 layer 3, that means Motion Pictures Expert Group 1 Layer 3. MP3 is a encoded wave file, it has sound quality nearly the same as audio CDs, but the size of the file is much smaller than the CD format. The size of a MP3 file comparing to a wave file is about 1:10, but the sound quality is around 95% of the wave file.
Are MP3s legal?
It is legal when the song's copyright holder has granted permission to download and play the song. It is legal to encode MP3s for personal use, however it is illegal to distribute or trade MP3s without permission from the song's copyright holder. As some of these sites , relate to Peer to Peer networks you will find both Copyrighted and non-copyrighted songs and other files. It is imperative that you share responsibly. Copyright law protects original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual compositions. Persons who reproduce, distribute, or publicly perform or display works without a copyright owner's consent, may be in violation of the law. You are responsible for your conduct and for ensuring that it complies with all applicable copyrights or other intellectual property rights and data-protection and privacy rights.
If you are still confused or concerned and want to stay 100% out of trouble, I suggest that you try the 2 week trial of realrapsody.
You can make sure that you stay legal when you use any of the p2p related sites by following the steps outlined by the EFF by clicking here.
How do I play MP3 files?
First thing you need is a computer, sound card and speakers. Then you must get a piece of software called an MP3 player, WinAMP ( download here) is a good FREE player, but there are many other MP3 players out there, you should try them out and find one for yourself. Open your mp3 file and it works as a CD-Player. Most of the sites include free MP3 Software. You can of course do what most people do an that is to burn it onto a CD and play it on your home ctereo or Car CD Player.
Why join a pay site when I can use a free service?
Nothing is really for free, many free file sharing programs contains adware and spyware that will slow down your computer, take over your browser and bombard you with advertising and you will get limited technical and customer support. You get what you pay for and if its free...... You can read more HERE.
There are 2 types of music related sites listed and reviewed on this site. The first group focus on supplying you a selection of P2P music download programs ranging from WinMx to Sharazaa and others containing no adware or spyware ( or include programs to stop the adware or spyware) and provide great technical support and help in using these programs. If you don't care about these things you can go directly to kazaa or Morpheus and download their free software but your own your own. But the small price these sites charge are well worth it! But just remember, that much of what you will find.... on these networks, which will be thousands of songs and movies, may be illegal for you to download depending upon the copyrights and country you are in. Using P2P is legal but you should not use it to break the law.
The other type of sites listed are realRapsody and Napster which do not use P2P technology and you pay per download. Every thing you will find on their network is 100% legal!
How do I cancel and get a refund?
Please do not send us your refund or cancellation request as we are just a review site; not the site that you have joined. If after joining any of the listed sites you are not completely satisfied, most, if not all of these sites offer a full refund policy if cancelled within your evaluation period.
To cancel, you can simply send the site you joined an email with your name, the date you joined and login information indicating clearly your situation. Most websites also guarantee a response within 24 to 48 hours.
The email confirmation from the MP3 site will include the name of the credit card processor they used such as Paysystems, ibill or clickbank. You can either call them on the phone or go to their website to cancel. Please also note, most websites have their customer service number on the credit card descriptor: you can view this on your next credit card or bank statement.
Sometimes when I click on a download link it shows me a bunch of symbols?
This problem only occurs in Netscape, it's one of the Netscape problems. If this happens, hit the back button on your browser to return to the download page, hold Shift and click on the link again, this will fix the problem. This is just a little thing bad about Netscape.
I can't download any MP3s found by the search engine!!
It's possible hat one of the links are MP3s from FTP sites, to download from a FTP site you need a FTP client, Netscape works, but a real FTP client is better. A good FTP program is CuteFTP. Go download it from the Software section.
How can I continue download after I got disconnect?
Download a program called Getright from the software section, it will let you resume download if you gets disconnected, it's a must get if you want to download MP3s.
"Server busy" What does that mean?
Sometimes when you try to download a song, it will respond with something like "server busy" or "server not responding". That doesn't mean the link is broken, it just mean that the server has reached it's limited # of users. You can try to download again in a few minutes.
How come sometimes the file I download is not a .mp3 file?
Because most of the MP3 files are illegal, they will get deleted from almost any servers. So people rename them to something like .zip .avi or other stuff to avoid the file from getting deleted. So when you see a file that should be .mp3 but it's not, just rename it to filename.mp3.
I downloaded a MP3 and it sounds like @#$*@?!
If this happens when you download a song, just use a program called Uncook95 to fix it. Maybe the file is a .ZIP file (renamed). That means that you have to decompress it with WinZIP. Possible the MP3 file is a MP3 Pro file (newer technology to get the file size smaller with almost the same quality), you will need a plug for ex. WinAMP to reach the best sound quality for these files, download it here.
I want to burn a mp3 file on a CD!
If your computer came with a CD burner, you are all set. Most likely your computer came with CD burning software or the site you join will provide you the software free. Or you can down a great free one at Nero (click to download) You can drag your MP3s to the burn window and after you have selected all the MP3s, click on burn. Nero will burn the MP3s in Audio CD format to CD. This is the easiest way of burning MP3s to CD (to play it in your car etc).
I downloaded a file, but it sounds terrible :-( and the file size is very small.
It's possible that you have downloaded a MP3 Pro file. MP3 Pro is a new technology to get mp3 files smaller. It's possible that the old mp3 will die and mp3 pro will be the new standard, due to the fact that it became more and more harder to find web space to host the mp3 files and smaller files are easy to download even with an old 56k6 modem. Anyway, you read this because your MP3 file sounds terrible! This is what you can do: download a MP3 Pro player or a Plug in for WinAMP. This to learn your computer to get the max sound quality out of your mp3 files. You can get MP3 Pro software at http://www.mp3pro.ws
